USS Massachusetts
Located in only 20-30 feet of water very close to Pensacola Pass with portions of the hull still exposed, this 350 foot wreck site was designated as an Underwater Archaeological Preserve on June 10, 1993, 100 years after her initial launching. Although a shallow dive site, it is not recommended for novice divers due to strong tides, poor visibility and close proximity to Pensacola Pass. After long service in the United States Navy as a battleship, and one of the first to be assigned a hull number – this ship was decommissioned in 1919 and in 1921 was towed to Pensacola and scuttled in shallow water to be used as a target for coastal artillery batteries. Much of the hull remains intact but strong currents, poor visibility and the closeness to Pensacola Pass and boat traffic make this site unsuitable for the novice diver or snorkeler.
