San Pablo / Russian Freighter
Located in 80 feet of water, about 10 miles from Pensacola Pass, this 315 foot, triple deck merchant steamer is more just a debris field but the boilers and a section of the stern are still intact. Originally sunk by German submarine torpedoes, killing all 23 crewmembers – the San Pablo was raised and towed to Panama City and re-sunk to be used as target practice. Determined to be a hazard to shipping and navigation, the ship was mostly destroyed by explosives. A haven for local fishermen because of the variety of large sport fish, divers can often see and photograph large Grouper, Cobia, Snapper and schools of baitfish.
