USS Strength
Located in 76 feet of water this 184 foot steel tender ship, which was originally on her side now sits upright thanks to Hurricane Opal. The USS Strength was a tender with a mine-sweeping fleet in 1944. After fighting off attacks by a Japanese submarine and Kamikaze plane, the ship was awarded 3 battle stars for her service in WWII. After being decommissioned in 1967 she became a learning tool for the Navy’s Salvage Diver School and was sunk and re-floated several times before her final explosive test. A plaque on the side of the ship lists her glory in battle and background history
