Leroy

Located in 120 feet of water about 17 miles west of Cape San Blas, this 144 foot cutter has little left of its structure except for the boiler. There is some scattered wreckage. Lots of larger snapper, grouper and amberjack inhabit the site. This is an advanced dive due to depth. The Leroy was originally a United States Revenue Cutter – the Samuel Dexter. These ships were built during the American Revolutionary War when Alexander Hamilton declared that ships needed to patrol the Atlantic to protect against pirates and halt smuggling activities. This ship was later used as a rescue vessel. Later these ships came under the command of the newly formed United States Coast Guard. The renamed tug “Leroy” sank during a storm in November of 1926. This is an advanced site due to depth.
