Proteus
Located in 72 feet of water, this 220 foot freighter is one of the shallowest wreck sites in South Florida. Sunk in 1985 in the Key Biscayne Artificial Reef Site it is great for the novice wreck diver. Although broken up by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the different pieces are home to diverse marine life. The scuba certifying agency NAUI helped provide clean-up of this freighter before it was sunk. The superstructure was removed the huge propeller is still intact and a great background for underwater photography. Lying close to the Biscayne wreck site, the Proteus is a very popular site. You may still find a license plate buried in the hold since the Proteus was once a garbage barge with thousands of license plates thrown into the ship by Bud’s Auto Parts on 34th. Nice novice wreck dive.
