Mandalay
Located in the shallow (10 foot) waters of Long Reef, this ship was a 128 foot double-masted schooner used as a part of the Windjammer Cruise business. This site is considered one of the best wreck dives in Biscayne National Park. Great for novice divers and snorkelers – the interior is easily accessible in many areas. The Mandalay went down on New Years Eve in 1966. It had been on a Bahamas cruise. After grounding all the passengers were safely transported to land, but looters stripped her before she could be salvaged. Attempts to pull her off the reef only made things worse and she was abandoned and sank. The wreck is covered with all kinds of coral, sponges and fans and schools of tropicals make the area their home. This site is excellent for underwater photography.
