Thunderbolt
Located 1 mile south-southwest of Market 20, 5 miles southeast (offshore) of Marathon Key in 75-115 feet of water. This is an advanced dive spot due to depth and strong currents. The 188 foot was sunk in March 1986 to be a dive attraction. She sits upright in 115 of water. Originally the USS Randolph she was an Army cable laying boat. Later used by FP&L as a research ship to attract and study lightening, she got her name “Thunderbolt”. Large hatches, propellers and a huge cable reel make great photo opportunities. Colorful soft corals and sponges cover the superstructure. You can get into the hull and go to 110 feet. Only advanced divers should attempt this dive.
