Sombrero Reef
Located 8 miles southwest of Key Colony Beach, 4 miles off Boot Key at the south end of Marathon Key in 5-35 feet of water, and marked by the 160 foot Sombrero Key Lighthouse, this outstanding collection of corals is one of the most popular dive sites in the middle keys. Novice dive and SPA site. The lighthouse is still fully functional and in service. 11 mooring buoys are located on the south side of the lighthouse. Snorkelers will also enjoy this site. Gorgonians, brain coral, finger and lettuce corals and fan corals are numerous. Marine life is diverse and colorful. There is an arch in the coral limestone large enough to swim through – makes a great photo opportunity. This is a SPA (Sanctuary Preservation Area) so no fishing or lobstering or interfering with the coral in any way is permitted and is strictly enforced.
Notes: Marine Preserve, Mooring Buoys, Good Snorkeling
