Adolphus Busch

Located 6 miles southwest of Big Pine Key in 100 -140 feet of water. 210 foot freighter sits upright and intact in a protected sanctuary. 12 large holes allow penetration. Not for the novice diver – this is an advanced wreck dive site. Originally named “Ocean Alley” but renamed Adolphus Busch after the oldest of the Busch brewing family, the ship was intentionally sunk in 1998 to create an artificial reef system. Although sightings of huge jewfish – up to 500 pounds is normal, this site is for the experienced diver only. No explosives were used to sink her because of the protective sanctuary area she rests in, but 12 large holes were cut in her sides and she was pumped full of water to make her sink. A nice intro to wreck diving.
