Alexander's Wreck

Lying in 25 feet of water, about 5 miles west of Key West, this debris field from the 300 foot USN destroyer USS Amesbury. The vessel is broken in half and the stern can be a boating hazard. Be cautious around the rough metal of the stern. Best known for its diverse marine life. This site is great for any level of diver. The USS Amesbury still has some of the deck guns visible. The wreck itself is split in half with a 150 yard gap in between and artifacts are still to be found. The name comes from the company (Chet Alexander Marine Salvage of Key West) that was towing the vessel to be scuttled. The ship went aground and before it could be moved a storm broke it in half. The hull is blanketed with oysters and corals and there is a healthy population of protected Jewfish who make their home there. This site is a successful breeding ground for the previously endangered species. In addition, you will see hogfish, angelfish, groupers, porkfish, sheepshead, snapper and spadefish.
