Molasses Reef

Considered a top dive site and a premium night dive site, with depths ranging from 10 to 70 feet and good visibility, portions of this site are designated Sanctuary Protection Area (SPA). This is a large natural reef formation with 40 mooring buoys provided for tying up to the site. Do not use your anchor. The Northern end is shallow and great for snorkeling as well as novice diving. Many varieties of coral and tropical fish make the site their home. Supposedly named for a barge that ran aground with a cargo of molasses barrels, included in the area are several very old wreck sites with ballast rubble, an old anchor, winch, and some great growths of elkhorn and boulder corals and seafans, brain coral, star coral and larger coral bases are home to many varieties of tropical fish. In the natural caves and ledges you’ll find lobster, crabs, eels, parrot fish, angelfish, filefish and the occasional ray, shark or turtle.
