Elbow Reef
Sometimes called “Wreck Reef” because of the number of wrecks in the area – this site varies in depth from 18 to 85 feet and offers clear blue water because of the closeness of the Gulf Stream. This also makes for some moderate currents. A buoy marks the deepest portion of the site at nelson’s Ledge. Tons of corals and tropical fish make this a great photography site and even novice divers can enjoy poking around the piles of ballast and old wreck sites. Elbow Reef is highlighted by a 36 foot light tower. With depths from 5 to 100 feet and lots of rubble, ledges, wreck debris, corals, sponges, and marine life make this dive site a treat for any level of diver. Snorkelers can enjoy the site as well. See anchor chain, old train wheels, 100 year old ship timbers, and a 300 foot steam freighter that went down in 1866. This area attracts large numbers of marine life, including tropicals. Experienced SCUBA divers should bring their underwater lights to explore the caves.
