USS Alligator

Located in only 12 feet of water, the ships crew blew it up rather than have it pirated after running aground. This 86 foot 12-gun schooner has little remaining other than her hull, which allows for some nice underwater photography of divers and/or snorkelers. Although not yet designated a National Landmark, it is believed that will happen someday soon. This vessel represents the construction of Navy vessels after the War of 1812. This vessel was used primarily against slavery vessels and pirates as well as other areas ripe for colonization. It went aground in 1825.
