El Infante

Located 75 yards southeast of Little Conch Reef, about a mile from the San Jose wreck this galleon went down in 1733 in a hurricane. Some wood beams and the ballast stones can still be seen and there is still treasure to be found. Fairly shallow dive that novice divers will enjoy. As part of the Silver Plate Fleet which was lost in a hurricane in 1733, this ship, a 60 gun galleon originally called Nuestra Senora de Balvaneda was taking treasure from Havana back to Europe. Scattered around the site debris area you can still find old silver coins which are unique in their markings. These are called “Pillar Dollars” and were the first of their kind minted in what was called the New World. You are allowed to search for relics at this site.
