Tenneco Towers
Located north of Miami and south of Ft. Lauderdale, this is the northernmost dive spot for dive boats coming out of Miami. These old oil rigs were placed at various depths beginning with West Tenneco at 105 feet; Middle Tenneco at 115 feet and Deep Tenneco with 2 parts – one at 185 feet and one at 205 feet. This is not a novice or intermediate dive. Tenneco Towers is the largest artificial reef in southeast Florida. It was created in 1985 when the Tenneco Oil Company sank 5 large sections of oil platforms. They are sunk in a line running east to west and each site is set at a different depth with two of the sections designated as deep water dives. The debris is covered by soft corals and many large fish can be found along with Queen Angels, Spanish Hogfish and once in a while a turtle. This is not a dive for novice or beginner divers. Open Water divers can access the first 3 towers, but leave the last two towers for the advanced SCUBA divers with deep water certifications.
