Captain Dan

Located in depths around 100 feet this is for more advanced divers and certified wreck divers. The wheelhouse structure begins at approximately 69 feet with the deck beginning at about 90 feet. The length is about 175 feet. Although basically intact, there are large access holes that allow wreck divers to view the inside of the structure. Originally built in 1937 as a Coast Guard buoy tender named the Hollyhock, this vessel was sunk in February 1990 and renamed in memory of Capt Dan Garnsey.

She sits in the Rodeo Reef Site, her bow pointing south. A large school of Glassy Sweepers maintains residence around the wreck. During her lifetime, the Hollyhock also served as a refueling station for seaplanes for the USAF in the Bahamas. In 1982 she was decommissioned by the Coast Guard, was purchased by a missionary and renamed the Good News Mission ship and went from port to port spreading the Gospel.

After becoming stranded in the Miami River, she was purchased to become an artificial reef. Hollyhock was renamed Captain Dan after Captain Dan Garnsey, who was a well known and respected fishing boat captain in the Pompano Beach area. A great advanced wreck dive with a fairly intact structure. There are large access holes to provide easy access to the interior of the vessel.
