Originally named the “Golden Venture” the vessel ran aground in 1993, 200 yards off the coast of New York. It was discovered that the ship was carrying 228 illegal Chinese immigrants who each paid $30,000 to be snuck into America. Ten immigrants who tried to swim for shore drowned, bringing media attention to the smugglers who were made to pay for their crime. After that the ship was used as a cargo boat in the Caribbean and renamed “United Caribbean”. Her owners fell on hard times and the ship was abandoned in the Miami River until the Palm Beach County Department of Environmental Resource Management salvaged her to scuttle and become a part of the artificial reef system.
